The girls class Valentines are almost done!!
Saturday, we spent all day peeling paper off crayons then breaking them and then baking them.
It was really fun for the girls and they are so happy that they made these Valentines for their classmates!
Supplies needed:
- Silicone Heart Molds (either cupcake or candy molds will work. Silicone so that you can easily pop them out when they're cooled.)
- Crayons
- Eager children who are willing to peel paper off crayons
- (optional) Little baggies and paper to beautify the finished product
Steps
- peel the crayons
- break each crayon into about 3-4 pieces and place in molds
- bake @ 250-275 degrees for about 10-12 minutes
- remove from oven and let cool until they've set
- when they have cooled enough, pop them out and let them cool a little more
Okay so that's not some super tutorial, but there's not much to it.
A few tips:
- it's cool to mix some colors, but I would not do too many so you can still see the separate colors.
- don't turn the oven up past 300. (I used some thicker crayons on a few and it took them a little longer to melt. so I just turned it up about 10 degrees. The last batch was the same thing, there were some thicker crayons in that one, so I asked my husband to turn the oven temp up again. He turned up to 325 and when he took them out, they were smoking! And then we could smell crayon for a little while afterward:) So definitely not 325 on the oven temp)
- some of my favorites were the camouflage ones, so think of some ones that boys might like. i.e. sports team colors , John Deere, camo.
Here are my molds I used and little baggies I will use. Now all we have to do is put the crayons in the baggies, staple some cute valentine-y paper on the top and add a corny saying like, "You COLOR my world, Valentine!"
Easy does it. Start peeling, breaking and baking.

Great idea!! I always ask the kindergarten teachers for their broken/to be tossed crayons at the end of the school year. We love making crayon hearts for valentine's day!

ReplyDeleteYou can find the molds at Walmart or a silicone heart shaped tray at Michael's in the candy section.

DeleteWe've done these in the past as well... love this project, I love your idea of doing different color schemes for the hearts. We usually just make it a mix of colors. Another TIP for you.... toss the crayons with the papers on in a bowl of warm water and let them sit for a minute or 2 and the paper just falls right off the crayon. The first year I made these I wanted to scream because some of the papers dont come off easy. But year 2 I did this and it was so much easier!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso you want to avoid putting too many dark colors together or else the crayon ends up looking almost black. I did much brighter colors and it was pretty!
Also I made a little valentine card to attach to the bag that said "You Color My World"... there were some other cute sayings that I cant think of right now of course :)

DeleteMade these today and my girls LOVED it! (We used a silicone heart cupcake tray we had bought on the dollar rack for their play kitchen!) They will be perfect for my 5 year old's preschool class. What a great idea!! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteIt all depends on what crayons you are using. Some crayons are thicker than others. I would test one out with a few crayons and see if you like the thickness. Then you can make the rest with either more or less. Hope this helps :)

ReplyDeleteALS- we made 10 hearts and used about 40 crayons: 3-4 crayons per cup seems to be a good number, depends how thick you want them!

DeleteI will try this with my lil boy this coming val-day. I remember when i was little with my mom, taking crayon shavings between wax paper melting with an iron for just a few seconds. Then glued it between two heart cut out construction papers. Took awhile to do but was soo cute. U can even rite a cute note on it too. My son pre-school classmates loved it!

DeleteI just Made these!!! They're AWESOME! I made them for my daughter's friends and daycare! They're only 1-2 year olds so I thought it was a cute idea! And another tip for getting the paper off of the crayons is to use a razor blade and take it right down the center! most of them just came right off! Thank you!

Thanks Creative Momma for this great idea. We tried these as something to throw in the return gift packs for the kids coming for my daughter's birthday party. And how well appreciated these were - to make it still better, we managed to find tiny magnets to stick at the back of these, so as to turn them into fridge magnets!!! ReplyDeleteI made these today with my toddler and they turned out really cute. Did you have a layer of wax that floated on the top as well, after melting them? I have about 50-50 in pigment and wax... I'm wondering if that's normal or if should have used different crayons (I bought the cheapest ones I could find so that may have been a mistake??). Did you use crayola crayons? Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!
