Baby Bumper Crib Set Reveal & Tutorial

New Baby Crib Set

I finally finished my baby's new crib bumper set and I'm so excited to share pictures with you today.  I sewed a custom crib set for my first born about 11 years ago.  It was a neutral color brown, so I was able to use it for all my kids, but after 11 years I felt it was time for an update.
Plus, this is my last baby so I need to get all my baby sewing in before it's too late. :)
This time I wanted to sew a crib set that was all girly, and what's more girly then ruffles?!
I didn't want her bedroom to be all pink, so I turned to my Pinterest boards for color combination ideas and these are the colors I decided on.
This was my inspiration for the design.  Positively Splendid's crib set is absolutely beautiful, but I didn't feel like I could fit 4 ruffles without the skirt dragging on the floor and I wanted to sew my ruffles on a different way, so I came up with my own pattern and tutorial with less ruffles.

Here is the tutorial I used to make the bumpers for the crib and
here is the tutorial I used to make the sheet.

Crib Ruffle Skirt Tutorial

Step 1 - Cut the following fabric & mark with letters:
Muslin
  - Piece A: Cut 1 (27 ¼” x 52 ½”) for top piece.  Cut ½” notches out of bottom two corners of piece.
  - Piece B: Cut 1 (9” x 52”) for front ruffle backing
  - Piece C & D: Cut 2 (9” x 27 ½”) for side ruffle backing
Fabric 1
  - Piece E: Cut 2 (5 ¾” x 52”) for top front ruffle
  - Piece F & G: Cut 2 (5 ¾”x 54”) for top side ruffles
Fabric 2
  - Piece H: Cut 2 (7 ¾” x 52”) for middle front ruffle
  - Piece I & J: Cut 2 (7 ¾” x 54”) for middle side ruffles
Fabric 3
  - Piece K: Cut 2 (7 ¾” x 52”) for bottom front ruffle
  - Piece L & M:  Cut 2 (7 ¾” x 54”) for bottom side ruffles

Step 2 - Sew together front ruffles:
-Fabric 1: Sew together 2 pieces (Piece E - 5 ¾” x 52”) for top front ruffle.  Press seam open.
-Fabric 2: Sew together 2 pieces (Piece H - 7 ¾” x 52”) for middle front ruffle.  Press seam open.
-Fabric 3: Sew together 2 pieces (Piece K - 7 ¾” x 52”) for bottom front ruffle.  Press seam open.

Step 3 - Mark ruffle backing pieces (Piece B, C & D) with a sewing fabric marker at 3 ½” down from top.  This will be where you attach the middle ruffles.

Step 4 - Sew finished edges:

-Muslin: Sew rolled hem on sides and bottom of muslin for all 3 pieces (Pieces B, C & D) of ruffle backing.

Sew rolled hem on non-notched side of top piece (Piece A).

-Fabric 1: Sew rolled hem on sides and bottom for all 3 top ruffles (Pieces E, F & G).

-Fabric 2: Sew rolled hem on ALL sides for all 3 middle ruffles (Pieces H, I & J)

-Fabric 3: Sew rolled hem on sides and bottom for all 3 bottom ruffles (Pieces K, L & M).

Step 5 - Gather all ruffles:

-Sew gathering stitch on top edge of all 9 ruffles (Pieces E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L & M).

Step 6 - Attach top ruffles to muslin ruffle backing.

-Attach top front ruffle (Piece E) to top edge of muslin ruffle backing (Piece B) with ¼” seam allowance, wrong side of ruffle on right side of backing.

-Attach top side ruffles (Pieces F & G) to top edge of muslin ruffle backing (Pieces C & D) with ¼” seam allowance, wrong side of ruffle on right side of backing.

Step 7 -  Attach middle ruffles to muslin ruffle backing.

-Attach middle front ruffle (Piece H) to muslin ruffle backing (Piece B) at 3 ½” down from top edge with a ¼” seam allowance, wrong side of ruffle on right side of backing.  This is where you made your mark with the sewing fabric marker.

-Attach middle side ruffles (Pieces I & J) to muslin ruffle backing (Pieces C & D) at 3 ½” from top edge, wrong side of ruffle on right side of backing.

-Finish seam with a zig zag stitch.

Step 8 - Attach bottom ruffles to muslin ruffle backing.
-Attach bottom front ruffle (Piece K) to muslin ruffle backing  (Piece B)with ½” seam allowance, right sides together.
-Attach bottom side ruffles (Pieces L & M) to muslin ruffle backing (Pieces C & D) with ½” seam allowance, right sides together.

-Finish seams with serger or use a zig zag stitch

-Flip ruffle over and top stich to keep ruffle down.

Step 9 - Attach ruffle backings to top piece.

-Attach front ruffle backing (Piece B) to muslin top piece (Piece A) where notches are with ½” seam allowance, right sides together.

-Attach side ruffle backing pieces (Pieces C & D) to muslin top (Piece A) on each side with ½” seam allowance, right sides together.
-Fold back over pieces & top stitch.

Hopefully this tutorial wasn't too confusing.  I tried to make it as easy as possible with pictures included.  Please email me if you have any questions.

    1. Sorry, I don't have exact yardage, but I think I bought 2 yards of each fabric just to make sure I had enough & I had plenty left over. :)

  7. I love your post and I'm thinking of making one of the crib skirts too. However, I only need my skirt to be 12" long because that's all that can be seen with how my crib is made. Can you tell me how long your crib skirt is? By my calculations it is about 15" long, is that right?

    2. Yes, it's about 15" long. You could do two ruffles or shorter ruffles to make the entire thing shorter. Hope this helps. Good luck. :)
